Wind Energy

Wind energy is energy powered by the wind. We convert wind into energy (like electricity) by using wind mills. Wind mills have rotor blades that are a key part to a wind mill. A wind mill's rotor blades're aerodynamically shaped, which help convert more wind into energy. Inside a wind mill, there's a generator. When the rotor blades're turning, it is converting wind energy into rotational energy (or torque). This torque (rotational energy) is what is then converted into energy we use like electricity. This happens because the rotor blades of a wind mill are connected to a generator on the inside of the wind mill. When the rotor blades spin, it is powering up (or giving energy) to the generator. The generator then converts the energy it has into energy we use (like electricity) and then conveys it through a network of wires and is then used where it ends up (like in a house).

ADVANTAGES

  • Wind's free, no fuel's used
  • Wind produces no waste or greenhouse gases
  • Land beneath wind mills can usually still be used for farming
  • good method of supplying remote areas energy

DISADVANTAGES

  • Wind can't always be predictable
  • Nice ares for wind mills (and wind mill farms) are not often near the coast
  • Wind mills can kill birds
